Beverage cans (soda and beer cans) are made from either aluminum or steel. Both types of beverage can are easy to recycle and provide a useful source of income for the recycling companies. You do not need to sort your used beverage cans into steel and aluminum varieties as these can easily be separated from each other using magnets.
Recycling aluminum cans saves 95% of the energy that would otherwise have been used to extract the aluminum from the bauxite raw material.
The recycling law in New Jersey dictates that all schools, businesses and individuals must recycle aluminum and steel cans.
Beverage cans should be rinsed with tap water and then placed in the curbside recycling box. If you do not have a curbside recycling scheme in your community you can take used beverage cans to your county municipal recycling center.
Check your local town or county recycling website for more details on what materials are collected in your curbside recycling box or at your nearest recycling center.

Can I Get Paid to Recycle Beverage Cans?
We are often asked if it is possible to sell used food and beverage cans to recycling companies in New Jersey and the simple answer to that is YES!
Some scrap metal yards will pay for aluminum or steel cans, but you will need to separate the cans into their different metal types because steel has a different commercial value to aluminum.
Use a magnet to detect which cans are made from aluminum and which ones are made from steel. The steel cans will stick to the magnet but the aluminum cans will not.
Collect a large number of beverage cans together before making the trip to the scrap metal facility or you will end up spending more money in gas than you will get back from the sale of the used cans. In addition, many scrap metal recycling facilities have minimum quantity requirements so phone ahead to confirm the amounts that will be accepted.
To find a scrap metal yard in your area look in your local yellow pages under "scrap metal" or on the yellow pages website. Alternatively, search the internet for scrap metal yards in your zip code area. We suggest you call them before making a trip to their facility to check their opening hours and to make sure they will accept the quantity of material you are able to provide as some scrap matel yards have minimum quanitity requirements.
Ecycler is a website that matches together people that have recyclable materials they wish to dispose of, with people that wish to collect those materials. If you register as a disposer or a particular recyclable material you can opt to give the materials away for free or to get paid 40% of the collectors profit for the waste material. The great thing about this system is that you can get paid simply for leaving certain recyclable materials outside of your home for collection on a pre-arranged day.
The following companies will pay for beverage cans that you collect for recycling.
Accepts aluminum beverage and aerosol cans from consumers. Aerosol cans should be completely empty. Steel cans will not be accepted.
Other aluminum and non-ferrous (not iron or steel) items will also be accepted for recycling. See the consumer or business recycling links below for more information.
